UK Health Forum comment on the British Journal of Sports Medicine editorial: Designed by the food industry for wealth, not health: the ‘Eatwell Guide'
Date14 June 2016
Year 2016
The British Journal of Sports Medicine has today published an editorial, Designed by the food industry for wealth, not health: the ‘Eatwell Guide’ by Zoe Harcombe. The UK Health Forum is concerned that the article is misleading.
Responding to the article, Dr Modi Mwatsama, Registered Nutritionist and Director of Global Health at the UK Health Forum said:
“The article’s claim that the Eatwell Guide is not evidence based is factually wrong. The Eatwell Guide is based on thorough reviews of the evidence by the government’s Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition (SACN) and its predecessor.
The latest revisions to the Eatwell Guide were informed by SACN’s 2015 review of the evidence on carbohydrates and health. The review included 600 research papers. It recommended halving the maximum sugar levels we should consume. It also recommended that we should eat more fibre from fruits, vegetables and pulses. These proposals are consistent with those of the World Health Organization.”
