Title
UKHF comments on proposed Ultra Low Emission Zone in London
Date08 January 2015
Year 2015
Summary
UKHF fully supports the implementation of an Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) by the Mayor of London and Transport for London. However, given the scale and duration of breaches of the legal limits and the severity of the health problem, the proposals need to be much more ambitious. The implementation of a ULEZ has been discussed by the Mayor of London since 2010 and is not planned to be fully implemented until 2020. Under the current proposal, London will not actually achieve compliance with NO2 limits even in the actual ULEZ area itself even taking into account other measures also being implemented or proposed by the Mayor.

The ULEZ is an opportunity for London to be a national and international leader in tackling air pollution from road transport. It is therefore crucial for it to set ambitious standards that will deliver a step change in London’s air quality and set the bar high for others to follow.
