Abstract
The first report on the government’s sugar reduction programme has been published today. It has found that food companies have failed to meet the 5% per 100g sugar voluntary reduction target for the first year, achieving an average sugar reduction level of just 2% in products. However, manufacturers of soft drinks have exceeded expectations for products in the soft drinks industry levy and reduced sugar levels by 11% through this mechanism ahead of its introduction.
