Abstract
Commenting on the Government’s commitment to introduce a levy on soft drinks as set out in the Queen’s Speech, Paul Lincoln, Chief Executive of the UK Health Forum said: “The UK Health Forum strongly supports the introduction of the soft drinks industry levy. The amount of sugar contained in soft drinks is a major contributor to childhood obesity and dental disease and must be dramatically reduced. The levy will be a strong incentive for producers to cut the sugar content across their product ranges. It is also a clear signal that the Government is prepared to act on the drivers of the obesity crisis and the colossal national toll of obesity-
related diseases including diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer. We know that this levy will be popular
-a recent poll of UK adults showed that 55% would support a tax on sugary drinks. (1).”
