Introduction
Alive ‘N’ Kicking is a specialist children’s and young people’s weight management/obesity programme which adheres to best practice as proposed in the NICE guidelines. The core of our programme is behavioural change using appropriate goals and an approach which is delivered in a supportive and empathetic way. The programme involves the whole family
and aims to promote a healthier lifestyle for families with overweight children in the UK. The programme workshops and activity sessions educate families on the importance of healthy eating and increasing activity levels, providing the support and guidance needed to empower families to make healthier lifestyle choices.Parents are also invited to lose weight, and this is also a very successful feature of the programme, with over half the parents losing weight alongside their child.
What did you do? Briefly describe what was involved in your case study
Alive 'N' Kicking is currently commissioned by six Primary Care Trusts. We deliver the programme in the following areas: Sutton & Merton, Luton, Suffolk, Bristol, Hull and St Helens and Halton.  The programme supports and empowers parents and children from 2-19 years old to adopt healthy eating practices, increase physical activity levels, reduce sedentary behaviour and build self esteem.

Each programme lasts 12 weeks and families are asked to attend for two
one-hour 15 minute sessions per week (once a week for Toddlers). Families take part in education sessions, physical activities and behavioural change workshops aimed at removing barriers to change and improving self-esteem.  The programme requires families to complete fun challenges together and provides behaviour change support techniques, such as fruit & vegetable and activity diaries or reward charts, and how to work together as a family to problem solve.
What was the outcome/result of your case study?
A full review of the Programme Evaluation is available on request. The below information is from the most recent cohorts passing through the programme in all age categories (approxiametly 1000 children pa).   A summary of the full report below shows that Alive ‘N’ Kicking is effective in helping families lose and maintain a healthy weight.
